March 12th, 2010 - presentation | representation

The exhibition "presentation | representation" presents ten positions in contemporary German photography. After a long period during which the first generation of Bernd Becher's former students from Kunstakademie Dusseldorf left their mark on the field of photography in both the national and international art world, a lively and heterogeneous photography scene has emerged, one which cannot be said to stem from any single educational institution or region or be assigned to any predominant style. This exhibition on contemporary German Photography from the Institut fur Auslandsbeziehungen aims to take a cross section at this juncture, bringing the works of ten photographers into dialogue. The works ranges from pictures generated purely by digital imaging to series of photography to series of photographs by artists who feel indebted to the authorial tradition. The different approaches of the artistic works, which examine the reference to reality, are presented and juxtaposed, highlighting the artists' individual ways of finding their images. Participating Artists: Laurenz Berges, Albrecht Fuchs, Karin Geiger, Claus Goedicke, Uschi Huber, Matthias Koch, Wiebke Loeper, Nicola Meitzner, Peter Piller, Heidi Specker. Exhibition Period: 6th Feb - 13th March 2010 Location: 2902 Gallery 11b Mount Sophia Road #b2-09 Singapore (228466) Contact No: 6339 8655 Email: info@2902gallery.com Operation Hours: Tue - Sat 11am - 8pm Sun: 1pm - 6pm We are closed on Mondays and Public Holidays. *During the Chinese New Year Period, the gallery will be closed from 13th - 16th Feb 2010.

March 12th, 2010 - To Kill a Mockingbird

Ripe with attitude, Goh Boon Teck’s delirious imagination has descended on one of literary history’s most perfect stories ever written, To Kill A Mockingbird. This stylized and unconventional adaptation features a strong multi-racial cast of veterans and promising actors from both television and theatre. Aggressively modern and assertively trendy, audiences will be treated to a visual pastiche inspired by the coexistence of good and evil, and the simplicity of light and dark. While taking artistic liberties in its staging, the issues of class, courage, compassion and prejudice, explored in the book remain fundamental. Starring Brendon Fernandez, Julie Wee, Jae Leung and Tan Shou Chen, To Kill A Mockingbird will intoxicate with its gritty and intense look at human behavior, gone wrong.Buy tickets now to win tickets to the show, enjoy discount from TCC and shopping voucher from 77th Street.

March 12th, 2010 - Trail Walking @ Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

Step into the nature reserves and journey back in time to the days before Sir Stamford Raffles arrived, when much of the island was covered with lowland, tropical forest. Though much of Singapore's original vegetation had been cleared for logging and cultivation, the forest at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve has remained relatively undisturbed. Likewise, patches of primary rainforest can be seen around the MacRitchie area and Nee Soon Swamp at the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. These nature reserves bounded 4 reservoirs - namely MacRitchie Reservoir, Lower Peirce Reservoir, Upper Peirce Reservoir and Upper Seletar Reservoir. The nature reserves act as water catchment for the reservoirs, in addition, the nature reserves also ensure the quality of water in the reservoirs.Other than being storehouses of water, today, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Central Catchment Nature Reserve are homes to more than 840 flowering plants and over 500 species of animals (including butterflies). With such an astonishing variety of plants, animals and insect life, the nature reserves are indeed treasure houses of Singapore's biodiversity.Covering an area of approximately 3,043 hectares, both the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Central Catchment Nature Reserve are managed by the Central Nature Reserve Branch of the National Parks Board.Picture courtesy of NParks Maps, Hiking & Biking Routes Click here for map of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.Click here for map of Kampong Trail.Click here for map of Mountain Biking RoutesClick here for Trail Etiquette.Click here for the Parks & Trees Act 2005.Form for Application to Hike at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve for groups of more than 30 Bukit Timah Nature Reserve Visitor CentreBegin your forest exploration with an orientation visit at the Visitor Centre. A self-guiding exhibit features essential information about the native flora and fauna of the nature reserves. The Visitor Centre is open from 8.30am to 6.00pm daily. Here, there are amenities like an information counter, restrooms, telephones, first aid and specialty shop. Car parking is available from 5.30am to 7.30pm daily. However, as lots are limited and the reserve is especially popular on weekends, public transport may be the better alternative.Bukit Timah Nature Reserve Walking TrailsRoute 1 (Red)Approximate walking time: 45 minsTrail grade: EasyRoute 2 (Blue)Approximate walking time: 35 minsTrail grade: EasyRoute 3 (Green)Approximate walking time: 1 hr 40 minsTrail grade: Moderate to difficultRoute 4 (Yellow)Approximate walking time: 2 hrsTrail grade: DifficultKampong TrailApproximate walking time: 1.5 hrsTrail grade: EasyMountain Biking TrailApproximate travel time: 30 mins to 1 hrTrail grade: Moderate to difficult Info provided courtesy of NParks

Opening Hours: Tue to Fri - 9am to 5pm, Weekends and Public Holidays - 8.30am to 5pm. Closed on Monday Description The HSBC TreeTop Walk (HSBC TTW) is the highlight of several long hiking routes in MacRitchie that brings you through different stages of mature secondary forest. The first of its kind in Singapore and in the region, this free-standing suspension bridge connects the two highest points (Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang) in MacRitchie and offers a bird's eye view of the community of plants and animals that live in the forest canopy. The total length of the walkway is about 250m and its height from the forest floor varies, with the highest point at 25m.Besides providing another avenue for nature recreation for Singaporeans, the HSBC TTW also play an important role in forest canopy research, an area many researchers were not able to get into because of lack of access. This bridge will help to facilitate surveys and plant identification work and further our understanding of how forest ecosystems work. The HSBC TTW was officially launched by the Minister of State for Finance and Transport, Mrs. Lim Hwee Hua, on 5th November 2004. The event also marked the start of another collaboration between NParks and HSBC that will reap benefits for the community. As part of efforts to enhance the HSBC TreeTop Walk as an outdoor classroom to promote an interest and appreciation of the natural sciences, HSBC and NParks established the HSBC-GCF (Garden City Fund) TreeTop Walk Fund to support a host of programmes and activities for conservation, education and outreach. This includes programmes for school children, workshops for teachers, training of nature guides as well as the production of educational materials. The distance to the entrance of the TreeTop Walk is approximately 4.5 km (1.5 - 2 hour walk) from the MacRitchie Reservoir Park and 2.5 km (45 mins - 1 hr walk) from the carpark at Venus Drive. Therefore, a round trip including the TreeTop Walk is about 7 to 10 km (3-5 hours depending on your walking pace). Please note that the walkway only allows for one-direction traffic. The entrance to the bridge is from Ranger Station via Peirce track.

March 12th, 2010 - 'I Will' Online Contest

Every year on 15 February, Singapore commemorates Total Defence Day to remind everyone that we cannot take security for granted and that everyone has a role to play to defend our country and keep our nation strong. There are many things we can do. It could be learning a life-saving skill, conserving energy, donating blood, or simply making a decision to be more friendly and welcoming to people different from us. To commemorate Total Defence Day in 2010, we would like you to tell us what you will do to help keep Singapore secure and strong, starting with two simple words: “I Will”. This is the theme for the Total Defence outreach efforts next year. One such effort is an online contest that Nexus will be running from 15 December 2009 to 15 March 2010, during which all Singaporeans are invited to come together to pledge their commitment to Total Defence. Join the contest and tell us your “I Will” pledge in the form of text, pictures and/or videos. Then, go the extra mile to fulfill your pledge together with like-minded Singaporeans and friends, and you could also win attractive prizes. Pledges with creative videos stand an additional chance of winning through public voting. Prizes to be won include Sony Vaio laptops, Apple iPods, and the latest game consoles. Here are some tips to make your “I Will” stand out: · Think about how you can make a difference – in your family, school or community. Do you have a unique skill or want to learn a new skill? Can you organise an event? How about doing something you are passionate about that can serve a greater good?· Be creative – Put on your thinking cap; let your imagination lead you. If you like, go for an unconventional approach while staying true to the theme of the competition. Use pictures, text, videos, or whatever you can get your hands on! · Be clear and concise – Remember, you want to inspire and attract fellow Singaporeans to join you in your “I Will”. InstructionsStep 1Think about your “I Will” – what will you do to defend our home and way of life in Singapore? Step 2Tell us about your “I Will” in any combination of words, pictures and/or videos and submit it on www.iwill.sg. You can make as many pledges as you want, but be prepared to rally support for each pledge. And remember that entries with videos qualify to win an extra prize!Step 3After submission, check your email inbox for the unique URL that points straight to your pledge – post this on your blog, Facebook or MySpace profile, tweet it. In short, tell everyone you know about your “I Will”.Step 4Go one better: Get like-minded people to join your pledge on www.iwill.sg.Step 5Take action – turn your “I Will” into reality. The real prize for this is the change you’re making in your own life as well as the lives of others!
